Now you have a good excuse to buy more house plants.
Just because you don’t want to see pollutants in your home still doesn’t mean they aren’t there. In a recent study, researchers identified eight common organic compounds (VOCs). These are potentially harmful and have been found in basic paints, house cleaning products, and other household items. There is a solution to combat it and we will show it to you in a moment. Some houseplants can absorb these compounds through their leaves and roots. These are the five houseplants that best fight the pollutants in the home and improve the air quality tremendously:
Money tree (Crassula ovata)
This succulent is a common houseplant that impresses us with its succulent evergreen leaves. The researchers have found that the money tree is number one among indoor plants, it can remove toluene from the room air and in this way purify your indoor climate. Tuluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is still called methylbenzene. This pollutant is found in paint thinners, varnishes, and adhesives. The money tree can absorb 91% of it within 12 hours and purify your indoor air.
Green lily (Chlorophytum comosum)
Chemicals found in products such as ink and gum cannot continue to exist in the presence of the green lily. It is still rightly called official grass or official palm, as it can often be seen in offices. The green lily still bears the name spider flower, which comes from its shape. No matter what you call this houseplant, it is very good at cleaning indoor air. It removes ethylbenzene (62%), p-xylene (92%) and o-xylene (93%) from the air over a 12 hour sampling period.
This houseplant looks really good, but it’s more than just a pretty focal point in the room. The bromeliad is the most effective at removing pollutants from indoor air. It removes more than 80% of the six of the eight harmful compounds, which makes your home air much cleaner – it removes 92% of benzene, which is a gas in cigarette smoke.
All houseplants are great at removing the acetone odor. Acetone is a chemical found in nail polish remover. But any species of Dracaena might do that best, it cleanses more than 94% of the chemical in 12 hours.
Cactus Consolea falcata
And just don’t think cacti can’t look beautiful because this is totally wrong! They are actually a great sight and purify the air in a room. For example, the Consolea falcate cactus can remove a number of the harmful chemical compounds from the air: 80% of p-xylenes, ethylbenzene and acetone and 60% of toluene, o-xylene and benzene.
