Early Life and Education

Adams was brought up among an exclusive American social circle and received an excellent education, at a time when that was commonplace. His formal studies focused on classics, history and literature – yet Adams soon realized his formal training wasn’t adequate to prepare him for life’s rapid changes; so he turned to self-education through reading, friendships and experiences instead – ultimately publishing his memoirs in The Education of Henry Adams which is considered one of the key works of 19th-century American literature.

Adams wrote an intimate memoir of his wife and family life that was only published after his death in 1918. Adams also produced The Education, which offers insight into his struggle to adapt to an ever-evolving world while offering honest and critical analysis of 19th-century educational theory and practice.
