Benjamin Huffman
Benjamin Huffman (AIM:BEN)
Ben Huffman is an American businessman specializing in project-level debt and equity financings as well as tax credit monetization transactions.
Huffman first made an impactful debut with the Browns in 1937 before shoulder injuries and World War II forced his departure. For four seasons after that he managed and played in minor league baseball.
Early Life and Education
Johannes Kuykendal and his brothers arrived from Germany to settle Hampshire County (now West Virginia) around Maryland’s border in 1743.
Huffman was a member of the United Brethren Church and served in the Civil War on the Union side at age 18. Later he studied teaching at Roanoke Classical Seminary.
He played baseball in the minor leagues for four seasons, managing Gloversville-Johnstown of the Class C Canadian-American League to a sixth-place finish out of eight-team league, as well as Springfield in Class B Three-I League; his average was an incredible.333 while leading them to an outstanding 71-55 record that came just eight games shy of first place Trois Rivieres of Quebec! Additionally he was active with local political and civic affairs.
Professional Career
Bennie Huffman made history when he made history himself by becoming one of the few players ever to launch his professional baseball career without prior minor league experience in 1937 with St Louis Browns. Unfortunately due to an injury sustained that season and World War II starting later on in his career – his playing days might have been extended even further had World War II not intervened and shortened it significantly.
Huffman was an efficient hitter who didn’t produce much power. His first major league hit came against Boston on July 3, driving in two runs with a single to center field and scoring his debut major league run.
Huffman received the Warner Jones Award from the Kentucky Racing Hall of Fame in 2002 for sharing and perpetuating the passion shown by late horseman Warner Jones. Additionally, he has served as race official at various tracks such as Keeneland, Fair Grounds and Churchill Downs.
Achievement and Honors
Huffman has earned various military accolades such as the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit award and Meritorious Service Medal (two awards). Additionally he serves on the boards at Churchill Downs and Keeneland racetracks in Louisville Kentucky.
Huffman struck gold during his only major league at bat against right-hander Spud Chandler at Yankee Stadium on June 3, 1937 before an estimated crowd of more than 40,000. Huffman sent one of Chandler’s pitches into the right-field stands and made history for Virginia by hitting it for what became one of his only homers as part of a Browns loss.
In 2019, Jones received the Paul N. Bogart Award from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners Association, honoring those who share his enthusiasm for horse racing and who support it with enthusiasm and devotion. It is considered their highest award from their organization.
Personal Life
Benjamin Huffman has always taken an active part in civic affairs and many decisions made by Rockport are discussed with him before being implemented. He serves on the Republican Central Committee of Spencer County and for two terms or seven years has held office as commissioner in that county.
He is a dedicated Christian churchgoer and actively works in its cause, while also being an enthusiastic Scottish Rite Mason of thirty-second degree, Shriner at Haps Temple Shriner and member of a local lodge of Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
In 1932, he gained admission to Purdue University and served as captain of their fencing team. To help cover tuition expenses during this time, he worked in a varnish factory to supplement his salary.
Net Worth
He currently owns at least 2,000 shares of Computer Programs & Systems Inc stock valued at $55,160 and has made at least one trade over the past seven days.
On their final spring break of their senior year at UVA, Huffman and Alexis Ohanian traveled to Boston for spring break to hear programmer-entrepreneur Paul Graham speak and encourage them to apply to his startup incubator, Y Combinator.
Huffman co-created Hipmunk, a travel website which provides real time information and data in multiple ways, in 2010. Since returning to Reddit in 2013, he has implemented technological upgrades as well as content guidelines. In addition, he worked to make it more suitable for advertisers.
