Early Life and Education

Copeland credits two powerful women in her life as sources of guidance: her ballet teacher Cynthia Bradley inspired her passion for dance; while Sylvia Delacerna encouraged her to maintain academic integrity despite the hectic rehearsals, recitals, and competitions of high school and college life; Copeland maintained an outstanding 3.8 GPA!

At first, Copeland only attended ballet classes at her local Boys & Girls Club after school. Her graceful movements soon caught Bradley’s eye who recognized her potential.

Copeland was legally guarded by her ballet teachers after an initial custody dispute between herself and her mother was resolved in 1998. When this court battle concluded, Copeland began taking classes at Lauridsen Ballet Centre in Torrance, California before attending two summer intensives before becoming part of ABT’s studio company and corps de ballet the following year.

Her mother Sylvia Delacerna went through multiple relationships and marriages that caused significant instability within their household; as a result she often moved with her siblings between motels and homes in San Pedro, California, where Copeland first started dancing.

At 13 she began ballet lessons, where her teachers immediately recognized that she possessed an innate talent. Influences included Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci as well as music icon Mariah Carey.

Copeland won first prize at the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards and was accepted into the San Francisco Ballet summer program with full scholarship, where she also became a National Coca-Cola Scholar. Later that same year, she joined ABT Studio Company – becoming its first African American female soloist later that same year.
