Dan Livingston, Attorney at Law
Dan Livingston works in an office decorated with black-and-white photographs of protests and rallies, such as one depicting his father speaking out against Nixon before thousands of demonstrators.
He represents or works closely with an array of labor and progressive organizations, such as UAW, SEBAC and UNITE-HERE. In addition, he serves as chair of Connecticut Health and Research Trust.
Early Life and Education
He had lived his entire life in Hubbard and attended both local high school and Youngstown State University, graduating as Sexton/Clerk for 33 years at Hubbard Union Cemetery before retiring as Sexton/Clerk after 33 years of service. Additionally he was an active member of Saint Patrick Parish as well as several community based organizations.
Livingstone was raised in an intensely Scottish environment of personal piety, poverty, hard work and education. By age ten he had found employment as a piecer at a cotton mill in Blantyre and his first week’s wages had enabled him to purchase Latin grammar texts for study.
His hallmark was a dry sense of humor and big heart; animal lovers would find comfort knowing he would always find time to adopt any stray. All who knew him will mourn his departure.
Dan was an early labor and progressive activist before entering law school. Born of a Union President and Social Worker mother, he spent much of his early life marching on picket lines before walking himself. Before entering Yale Law School he served as a Union organizer for two years and also as an attorney.
His practice specializes in employment & labor law in Connecticut. Additionally, he has handled complex business and real estate litigation matters. Furthermore, he belongs to several professional associations and regularly speaks at labor seminars & progressive conferences.
He has worked on various graphic design projects for nonprofits and corporations. He believes graphic design to be an effective form of social change, and is passionate about incorporating design education into modern liberal arts curricula.
Achievement and Honors
Livingston spent two years as a labor organizer after graduating from Hampshire College. There he protested U.S. foreign policy during the final days of Vietnam War by occupying President’s Office; then conducted various union campaigns including one to organize employees at Hartz Mountain Pet Supplies in Jersey City.
He was a trusted adviser on major transactions for clients such as Tabcorp, Echo Entertainment, ANZ and Westpac and was honored to receive inclusion into Australasian Lawyer Hot 40 2014.
Livingston has also published several books related to James Rigney’s epic fantasy novels, “The Origins of the Wheel of Time.” As an avid fan, Livingston keeps many personal items related to Rigney in his offices to maintain his link to it.
Livingston was raised by progressive activists. At 7-years-old he marched in Washington and found passion in politics similar to what his peers experienced for baseball cards. Following two years as an organizing union organizer he went onto Yale Law School with his UAW card still present in his wallet.
He now represents or collaborates closely with many labor and progressive organizations as they fight back against an ascendant right wing, including state employees’ bargaining agent coalition and unions in Connecticut. His clients include these unions.
