Daniel Matellon
Daniel Matellon was born in Havana, Cuba on February 2, 1988 and competes as a professional boxer in the Light Flyweight division. Since making his professional debut against Johnny Garay on October 21, 2016, Matellon has amassed 14 wins via four round unanimous decisions to become an established fighter. On June 9th Matellon will face Carlos Canizales for an eliminator bout for WBA KO Drugs title; should he prevail he will become eligible to fight in world championship bouts.
Early Life and Education
Daniel Matellon is an award-winning songwriter whose songs have been performed by Broadway stars including Beth Leavel (Tony Award for The Drowsy Chaperone) and Lindsay Mendez (Tony Award for Carousel). Additionally, Daniel has composed music for several new musical theatre works.
Matellon, currently ranked #1 by both WBA and IBF at 108 lbs, fights exclusively in an orthodox stance and has boxed 91 professional rounds for 13 wins with only 1 loss – an amazing accomplishment considering his small stature (55 cm). Matellon attributes his success to hard work ethic and dedication during training; two figures that inspired him were Yunier Dorticos and Oscar De La Hoya growing up in Havana as role models while trying to break out from stereotypes of Cuban fighters having lengthy amateur careers – role models he attributes his success to.
Professional Career
Matellon stands out in the light flyweight division as an undisputable underdog. Despite his small frame, he is highly agile and an accomplished boxer-mover. His style is very intelligently put to use – creating an uncomfortable opponent for all his opponents.
He has amassed an unblemished professional record to date, with nine victories and five knockouts across eleven bouts since making his professional debut on October 21, 2016 in Panama City.
Matellon holds the WBA Fedelatin Light Flyweight title after defeating Erik Omar Lopez and will next take on Carlos Canizales, former regular champion in their division and co-promoted by Matchroom Boxing and Canelo Promotions; it is scheduled for Saturday at Los Andes Mall in Panama City.
Achievement and Honors
Matellon wants to disprove the common perception that Cuban boxing fighters exhibit an unusual style that won’t translate well on American TV, and will take on Venezuelan Carlos Canizales on Saturday for a final eliminator for their regular title at 108 pounds.
Matellon began by landing hard right handers early, before using his feet to take advantage of an exhausted Argumedo and unleash a series of counter right hands against his body.
Matellon kept up the pressure in rounds nine and ten. Fists clashed frequently and referee deducted points from Canizales for headbutts; Venezuelan won by technical decision with scores 77-73 (twice) and 76-74.
