Early Life and Education

David Conwill was born in Cil-y-Cwm, Carmarthenshire, Wales to Conwil Conwill and Margaret Conwil.

He studied art at Howard University in Washington, D.C. with Lois Mailou Jones and Alexander “Skunder” Boghossian. Additionally, he met abstract painter Sam Gilliam who inspired him to create ritually charged multimedia installations and performances that fuse Christian with African American culture.

After graduating from Howard, Conwill relocated to Louisville and finished his first major work: a mural and painted-glass commission for his family’s church in Louisville. The artwork paid homage to his ancestry by reimagining biblical figures as black Catholics – an act which would define his career going forward.

As a key player in designing and building its crown jewel – a $280 million exhibition hall devoted to black art and culture – Mr. Conwill played an integral role in its development.

Conwill works as an emergency physician and certified teacher of preventive medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He’s a member of the Society for Public Health Education, Society of Healthcare Administration, and American College of Emergency Physicians. Recently he took on the role of CEO at Redwood Living Inc. – an innovative development and management company headquartered in Cleveland, OH.

David Conwill has an extensive career in real estate. After serving as president of Associated Builders and Contractors, he joined Redwood Living where he spearheaded its strategic growth platform by building Redwood Neighborhoods throughout Suburban America.

At Redwood Living, David was instrumental in leading the company’s vision and product, as well as inspiring its ambassadors and cultivating its organizational culture. Additionally, he played a significant role in formulating successful expansion and growth strategies for the business.
