David Robeson

As a youngster, david robeson excelled both academically and athletically. His efforts earned him a scholarship to Rutgers College where he was honored twice with consensus All-American football player status and class valedictorian awards.

He went on to earn his law degree at Columbia University while simultaneously supporting himself by playing professional football on weekends.

Robeson earned a full scholarship to Rutgers College, where he excelled both academically and athletically. He became a Phi Beta Kappa student while also earning All-American status for football.

After college, he attended Columbia University Law School before leaving due to intense racism within his firm.

He soon started acting in plays and singing spirituals, quickly becoming his main talent. His booming organ-like voice soon caught the attention of Broadway composer Jerome Kern who took notice.

In 1922, Goode traveled with his wife and manager Eslanda Goode to England, studying languages while acting in multiple stage productions such as Eugene O’Neill’s All God’s Chillun Got Wings and The Emperor Jones.

After college, he attended Columbia Law School in New York City and was named class valedictorian. However, his disillusionment with legal profession was further compounded when one of the white secretary refused to take dictation from him on account of his skin tone.

After graduating, he turned to acting and singing and quickly established himself as one of the most successful African American performers of his era. He earned more than any other African American entertainer and earned star billings in plays such as Shakespeare’s Othello and musical Showboat; films including Jericho and Proud Valley.

Robeson earned both academic and athletic distinction at Rutgers, earning four letterman berths and two All-American Football honors as well as recognition for his work as an actor, singer and political activist.

Paul Leroy Robeson was one of the pioneers of the Harlem Renaissance movement that spread nationwide during its initial stages in the 20th century. At that time, he was among the first African-American artists to refuse segregated audiences in theater and concert venues.

He became an outspoken champion for cultural black nationalism, fighting segregation and racial discrimination throughout his life. Furthermore, he advocated strongly for international peace and democracy – often traveling to war zones around the globe in support of various causes (including Chinese independence). Additionally, he presented an anti-lynching petition to United Nations while receiving Stalin Peace Prize from Soviet Union.

Personal Life

Robeson was known as both an accomplished actor and passionate anti-racism and social justice advocate, campaigning against racism and for social justice during McCarthyism and Cold War times. Due to this activism and outspokenness – as well as McCarthyism’s ongoing influence – his activism made him vulnerable to state and civil harassment.

After graduating from Columbia University Law School, Robeson decided against pursuing a legal career, instead choosing an artistic path as an outlet for his moral and political convictions. He appeared in films such as Body and Soul (1924), Jericho (1937) and Proud Valley (1939).

His travels to Europe between 1927 and 1939 were instrumental in his artistic growth as an artist. There he learned about international communism and Pan-Africanism politics, meeting future African leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah from Ghana and Jomo Kenyatta from Kenya.
