Monk David Steindl-Rast
St David, Dewi Sant, was a Welsh saint who established a monastery in this area and lived an austere life in the Celtic monastic tradition.
His life and legend are associated with this place, where many people travelled to him for healing and for forgiveness of their sins. His shrine in the cathedral is still used today and is a focal point for prayer and reflection.
Early Life and Education
Monk david’s early life was relatively uneventful. He was raised by his parents, both of whom were religious.
He attended a Catholic high school and then entered Downside Abbey, where he made simple vows in 1915 and solemn vows in 1918. He also studied classical languages and philosophy at Cambridge before he was ordained a priest in 1922.
While studying, he met a woman named Elisabeth Morgan who influenced him greatly. When she died, he received a large inheritance from her.
Professional Career

Achievement and Honors
David Steindl-Rast is a Catholic Benedictine monk, renowned for his active participation in interfaith dialogue. He co-founded the Center for Spiritual Studies and received the 1975 Martin Buber Award for his achievements in building bridges between religious traditions.
He divides his time between periods of hermit’s life and extensive lecture tours on five continents. His audiences have included Buddhist monks and Sufi retreatants, Tohono O’odham Nation members, New Age communes, Naval Cadets at Annapolis, missionaries on Polynesian islands and participants at international peace conferences.
He also writes widely, contributing chapters and interviews to more than 30 books. He is a Board member and Advisor to A Network for Grateful Living, a global non-profit he co-founded in 2000.

He is a Benedictine monk, author, lecturer and international spiritual leader who is regarded as the “grandfather of gratitude.” Brother David has inspired countless people throughout his life with his inspiring message about gratefulness.
In addition to his work as a monk, he has written numerous books on various topics including religion and science. He is also known for his interfaith dialogues with leaders such as Thomas Merton and Eckhart Tolle.
