David Sweeney

Early Life and Education

Sweeny was born in Argentina and immigrated to the United States when he was young.

David had always desired to perform for an audience, despite his parents’ misgivings about a career in entertainment. In high school, David began taking acting classes to prepare for this dream and has been honing his craft ever since.

David graduated as a college student from the University of Vermont with a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance, which led him to pursue a career in real estate development.

He currently serves as president and CEO of PDS Development Corporation, where he specializes in industrial revitalization and the growth of social enterprises and emerging manufacturers. As founder of Greenpoint Manufacturing & Design Center (GMDC) and Civic Builders, he has spearheaded urban redevelopment projects that have preserved over $350 million worth of buildings while encouraging the construction of new affordable housing and commercial/industrial developments.

Professional Career

Sweeny has been involved in real estate development since 1991 and has invested $350 million into purchase, rehabilitation and new construction projects. These range from multi-building industrial portfolios to affordable housing developments to special purpose medical and community facilities.

He has also been actively engaged in many city redevelopment initiatives, working with non-profit organizations to acquire and renovate industrial buildings so they can be put back to use by local business owners.

He is a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, where he provides advice to oil and gas companies on complex mergers and acquisitions. His portfolio includes high-profile deals such as Diamondback Energy Inc.’s $9.2 billion merger with Energen Corp., Gulfport Energy Corp.’s $1.8 billion purchase of Vitruvian Exploration, and Stone Energy Corp.’s $2.5 billion merger with Talos Energy.

Achievement and Honors

David Sweeny has earned recognition for his achievements in entrepreneurship and industrial redevelopment. As founder and president of PDS Development Corporation, a Brooklyn-based real estate development and finance company that has transformed five industrial spaces in Greenpoint into incubators for 130 emerging businesses, David has made an impactful difference.

He was also named an executive at Research England, the government organization responsible for supporting university research and encouraging collaborations across the UK. Prior to this appointment, he served as Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange at HEFCE where he spearheaded the creation of the first Research Excellence Framework. Furthermore, he had served as statistician at two BBSRC research institutes and Vice-Principal for Research at Royal Holloway, University of London – but perhaps his greatest accomplishment was winning both TED Prizes and being a finalist in The New York Times competition!

David Sweeny is happily married to Alison Sweeney and they enjoy a happy life together in California. Together they have two children.

They met while still in high school and began dating for three years before getting engaged. On July 8th of that same year, they tied the knot privately at a private ceremony held at their home.

He is a former police officer and his wife is an actress.

He loves fishing when he has free time, as well as visiting different places and having fun with his family.

He is a retired police officer and proud husband to Alison Sweeney. They have been together for 20 years, sharing two adorable children.
