Koetter and his wife Kim live in Pocatello with their three children – Derek and Davis as well as Kaylee – all who make a living through sports.
He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 1981 but did not go on to play professional football; instead he started coaching the following year.
Early Life and Education
Dirk Koetter, son of Jim and Barbara Koetter of McCook Idaho, has always shown signs of being an aspiring coach since childhood when he led playground games while visiting relatives nearby. Both his parents are longtime educators in Idaho state education; both say their son cannot contain his emotions when talking about becoming Tampa Bay Buccaneers head football coach.
After graduating from Highland High School and Idaho State University with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in athletic administration in 1981 and 1982 respectively, he launched his coaching career.
He progressed through college coaching positions, Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster and Atlanta Falcons’ two stints as offensive coordinator before landing his current head coaching gig with his alma mater for their inaugural attempt at an NFL head coaching position.
Professional Career
Dirk Koetter graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Boise State in 1981 before returning immediately to school to earn a master’s in athletic administration. Following this he began coaching both college and NFL levels including Boise State and Arizona State, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he served as head coach or offensive coordinator respectively.
Koetter, 65, had planned to spend his retirement enjoying golf and sipping Coors Light but was drawn back into football thanks to watching his son Davis take charge at Boise State football team. Now serving as offensive analyst he replaced interim OC Tim Plough during spring football games this spring.
He brings extensive experience, mentorship and strategic insight to the program. His efforts in Jacksonville and Atlanta helped produce Pro Bowl seasons from players such as David Garrard, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Fred Taylor.
Achievement and Honors
Koetter’s success coaching college-level football propelled him into the National Football League, where he served as offensive coordinator for three different franchises: Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At Atlanta he oversaw an unparalleled offense featuring quarterback Matt Ryan as well as wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White that set records during his time there.
The Bucs hired Koetter as their rebuilding leader and have seen positive results this season under his watch. His coaching style has been tailored specifically for each player on his roster; including Jameis Winston who favors a power game approach.
Koetter and his wife Kim are parents to four children: sons Derek and Davis as well as daughter Kendra and Kaylee who competed with Tampa women’s volleyball until an injury ended her career prematurely.
Personal Life
Koetter was raised in Pocatello, Idaho where he attended Highland High School before proceeding on to Idaho State where he graduated with both his undergraduate degree in 1981 and master’s in sports administration two years later. Although he never became an NFL football player himself, his dream did not vanish completely.
He gained coaching experience at college levels including UTEP, Missouri, Boston College Oregon and Boise State before accepting the offensive coordinator role for Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007. From day one he enjoyed success with them.
Koetter was responsible for grooming former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan to set franchise records in passing yards and touchdowns. Additionally, Kim and Koetter share three children; daughters Kaylee and Kendra as well as sons Derek and Davis.
