He initially attended Houghton college in New York but left to provide for his family during the Great Depression. For ten years after that he worked as an insurance clerk in Manhattan while also taking voice lessons.
At age 23, Shea set Rhea Miller’s poem I’d Rather Have Jesus to music, creating what later became the hymn I’d Rather Have Jesus. Shortly afterwards he joined Billy Graham’s crusades in 1947 and started performing regularly on his Hour of Decision radio broadcast from 1950 on.
