George Labarge was an esteemed steamboat captain and businessman, operating along the Missouri River for many years.
LaBarge was known for his hardworking, honest and dependable boatman reputation which earned him many admirers and clients. Additionally, LaBarge had a legendary spirit and courage in the face of hardship.
Early Life and Education
LaBarge’s early career was in the fur trade. He traveled with a bull boat on the Loup River in Nebraska and later with mackinaw boats on Missouri and Platte rivers.
In 1835, he contracted with the American Fur Company to transport their stock to St. Louis.
He returned to the river in 1848 and joined Captain Joseph A. Sire’s steamboat, the Martha. As Captain Sire retired after 30 years on board, he assumed control of that vessel as its master.
He also constructed a steamboat named Mary. Tragically, in 1856 an ice-floe devastated the Mississippi River, killing all but those aboard the St. Mary and LaBarge’s assistant.

George LaBarge was a renowned Secret Service agent who tragically passed away after being involved in a head-on collision on a mountain road near California. With over two decades of experience protecting monarchies around the world, LaBarge had much to be proud of.
He’s been the guitarist/front man for popular performing acts like Bond, Rain, Sweet Blindness, Zwol, Stem, Stingaree and The Dexters; recorded and toured with Canadian talent such as The Irish Rovers, Doug Riley, Ian Tyson David Clayton-Thomas Rhinoceros Long John Baldry; and proudly performed alongside Hall of Famers in guitar-playing capacities.
Achievements and Honors
George LaBarge has earned a number of distinctions throughout his life. He was inducted into the American Chemical Society and awarded with a Norton Prize.
He has also been recognized for his contributions to chemical education, having written articles for both the Journal of Chemical Education and American Institute of Chemists.
He set a speed record for steamboats on the Missouri River in 1850 when he piloted his St. Ange to Yellowstone River in twenty-eight days. A year later, he took that same boat down Poplar River.
