George Skipworth was born in Halton Holgate, Lincolnshire, England in 1841 and later became a baritone. In 1863 he wed Emma Rowe.

Skipworth has received many honors for his work in music. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts, Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording, and National Award for Distinguished Service.
