Olive was born with tricuspid atresia, an anomaly wherein her right upper and lower pumping chamber valve did not form correctly in her mother’s womb, leaving her skin “blue,” preventing oxygen intake, and hindering development. As a result, Olive did not receive adequate nourishment in her first two years of life.

She was born in Grand Junction, Colorado to Raymond and Ruth Bartholomew and attended local schools before working at Mountain Bell Telephone and Montgomery Wards Department Store in Grand Junction.

Personal Life

Rutherglen Winery and Restaurant are a family-oriented winery and restaurant situated in Rutherglen in north east Victoria Australia, producing premium range wines while hosting weddings, conferences and luncheons on their historic property.

Grand was one of the leading advocates of New Woman writing, advocating chastity and maternity while challenging Victorian patriarchal views that saw women as selfless ‘angels in the house’ dedicated solely to domesticity and motherhood. Additionally, she strongly condemned male sexual prodigality while supporting women’s right to reject it in their relationships if sex between husbands were occurring.

In 1901 she conducted a lecture tour across America, advocating rational dress, cycling as an exercise form and women’s suffrage.
