Hockey Thug

Hockey thug is a term to describe players with physical toughness and fighting ability who serve as both catalysts and energy boosters for their teams.

However, their role has diminished over the years as gaming has moved away from combat-oriented play and they take up valuable roster space that could otherwise be utilized by more skilled players.

Early Life and Education

Ice hockey has long admired players with hardiness and perseverance, yet is often known for its on-ice vigilante justice. So-called goons or enforcers fight to defend teammates as part of its culture, contributing significantly to its appeal.

No matter your view on hockey fighting, it is shameful that Donald Fehr and the NHLPA have allowed those like Tom Wilson in our league who put lives of teammates in peril just for money to remain protected by them. All those in Player Safety who defend them should also be fired immediately.

Achievement and Honors

Doug attends a minor league hockey game with his friend Pat, a broadcaster for public broadcast. Pat taunts an opposing player by calling them a “faggot,” prompting the opponent to climb into the stands where Doug then beat up on them before being hired as enforcer by Doug’s hometown coach Ronnie.

The Snowy Cones Ice Cream Factory had become home for an increasingly dangerous gang, who resided there and utilized various weapons, such as chrome hockey sticks that doubled as blades with toe and heel cuts cut off, when Batman and Robin infiltrated it and battled them on an icy street in Gotham City.

Tom Wilson would likely be banned from any league without its thug culture; yet, the NHLPA continues to protect him year after year, placing all other players on the ice at risk.

Personal Life

The term goon refers to players who engage in aggressive play on the ice and may fight or intimidate opponents. The term may have originated during the 1970s; its roots likely lie with Alice the Goon from Popeye comic strip fame.
