Jack McGrory has long been recognized as an esteemed leader of San Diego. He has left an indelible mark on its urban legacy and generously serves on various nonprofit boards – such as UCSD Board of Overseers, USS Midway, YMCA of San Diego County and Mainly Mozart.

Early Life and Education

McGrory prioritized public-private partnerships during his time as city manager, playing an instrumental role in Petco Park development as well as leading efforts to consolidate city and county government services. Furthermore, he made key contributions towards City Heights Initiative efforts.

He drew widespread skepticism when he used city funds to purchase an aging downtown high-rise and convert it into a library, even as librarians protested this plan behind-the-scenes.

McGrory began negotiations between the City and Charger owner Alex Spanos to expand Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley. As U-T’s Jack Golding exposed significant cost overruns, McGrory blocked any investigation of these costs; also blocking a proposed ballot measure calling for independent review of their contract.

Professional Career

Jack McGrory is a prominent business leader and civic figure who has made considerable contributions to San Diego. Former City Manager, Chairman & CEO of Price Legacy Corporation as well as serving on several nonprofit boards; as well as being a graduate-level Public Administration instructor at San Diego State University.

As city manager, he placed great value in public-private partnerships and led efforts to consolidate city government services. Furthermore, he played an instrumental role in Petco Park development and City Heights revitalization.

At a conversation with UCSD students, he reported it was “fun” serving as city manager but admitted some blame him for sowing the seeds of today’s pension crisis during salary and benefits negotiations in the 1990s. He still teaches urban studies and planning at UCSD.

Achievement and Honors

After earning his Bachelor’s degree from Colgate University in 1971-1974, McGrory enlisted in the Marine Corps. Following this time of service he earned both a Master of Public Administration from San Diego State University and law degrees from University of San Diego.

McGrory maintains strong connections to USD (he sits on its Board of Visitors for its Law School) and UCSD (he lectures there), in addition to serving on numerous boards like Teach For America in San Diego, Mainly Mozart, Campanile Foundation at SDSU, USS Midway Museum etc.

McGrory may have come under scrutiny for two costly city projects, yet his allies in business and politics remain loyal to him despite these costly endeavors. McGrory was instrumental in planning to convert SDCCU Stadium site into an SDSU satellite campus as well as Padres ballpark.

Personal Life

McGrory’s civic involvement includes memberships on the boards of Teach For America San Diego and USS Midway Museum/Campanile Foundation. Additionally, he supports Jack McGrory Internship Coordinator within SDSU School of Public Affairs by funding tuition scholarships, internship opportunities and study abroad scholarships for student veterans and non-veterans alike.

Ex-city manager Jeff Price brings with him years of experience navigating municipal politics, such as his work to bring the Padres back to Petco Park and consolidating services through Price Legacy Corporation. Furthermore, his involvement with Price Charities and their community initiatives made an indelible mark on City Heights neighborhoods across San Diego.

Governor Jerry Brown appointed him to serve on the California State University Board of Trustees and currently lives in La Jolla.
