John Aghayan was born and raised in Alhambra, California. He moved to Rosemead, California in high school and attended a private Christian school.

He then enrolled in business and finance at the European Business School in Paris. After completing his studies, he travelled to New York and worked at AXA Financial.

A longtime partner with costume designer Bob Mackie, Aghayan designed costumes for Alice Through the Looking Glass, Judy Garland’s musical variety show and many other television shows and films. He also created the costumes for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
