John Bukovich

His most famous contribution to society was the founding of the Restoration Movement in Poland. Along with Jerzy Sacevich and Tomasz Jaroshevich, Bukovich pioneered the missionary work that brought hundreds of thousands of people across the Iron Curtain.

He was also a longtime fan of the University of Notre Dame, and he was a proud alumnus. In addition, he was a dedicated husband and father, whose love for his family made him a wonderful example of what it means to be a true American. He will be missed by his wife, Mary Ann; his children, Joseph (Kerry) Bukovich of Cincinnati, OH; Andy (Susan) Bukovich of Tucson, AZ; and Annie Butkovich Geary of South Bend, IN; and by his many grandchildren.

Professional Career

He was a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers organization for two seasons. Then he joined the Detroit Red Wings farm club in Indianapolis.

Bukovich was a great player and an excellent leader. He had a blazing fastball and a sharp curveball that he used to beat opponents with.

He and his brothers Joe and Mike played for several Painesdale teams during the 1940s. They also starred in hockey at the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame, where their father was a member.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on several community boards. The best part of all was that he was a loving husband, father and brother to his wife, Mary Ann, for nearly 57 years.

Personal Life

In his spare time, John Bukovich enjoyed watching football games. He also volunteered his time for many local charitable organizations.

When he was an undergraduate at the University of Notre Dame, he played on the football team and earned All-America honors. He was a devoted student and leader of his class.

When John Bukovich graduated, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio. He later went on to attend the University of Cincinnati, where he played football. In 1938, he was named to the All-Ohio first-team offensive guard. He also earned Associated Press “Little All-America” honors. He also served in the military and received several armed service awards. He is survived by his wife, Jan.; and his son, Ronald (Cindi Greenwood) Bukovich of Blaine; and his stepsons, Craig Taylor of Nisswa and Eric Taylor of Baxter.
