John DiMatteo is one of the most esteemed intellectual property litigators in New York State, regularly appearing before federal courts and the International Trade Commission with regard to patent matters. Early Life and Education
John was born and raised in Portland, Maine and attended Deering High School and Babson College. Additionally, he served in the United States Navy.
He was a hero of the Korean War and earned two Bronze Stars for his service. Throughout his career as an electrician’s mate in the Navy, he helped repair battle damaged ships and conducted port calls in both Korea and China.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and working to make a difference in people’s lives. As consultant for the Bernard Osher Foundation and trustee on 17 boards, he was an enthusiastic supporter of arts, higher education, and served on Portland Museum of Art’s board. Sadly, his life will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

DiMatteo has been an active participant in the Canisius Alumni Association for two decades, serving as Board of Regents Chair during one year and co-chairing its Regents Scholarship Ball twice. Furthermore, she founded Women of Canisius–an organization which provides personal and professional encouragement to female graduates so they can assume leadership roles within their fields and communities.
John DiMatteo was one of the original founders of what would later become known as The DiMatteo Group, an insurance agency with a prestigious name. Their headquarters at 79 Bridgeport Avenue offer an array of services from business and personal insurance to financial advice, accounting and tax preparation. John’s siblings Loretta, Rosemarie and Victoria are all active participants within the business in various capacities.
He had an interest in film, having played a minor role in George A. Romero’s Surviving the Dead and appearing as a miracle worker in Absolution (TV movie). Aside from his business success, he was also a dedicated family man who enjoyed golfing and playing poker – his passing being a sad loss to Cumberland County.
