He has constructed a backpack guitar amplifier and glockenspiel harness. In his free time he enjoys listening to music and watching movies; his iPod has 14,000 songs stored there for concerts or festivals that he attends.

Early Life and Education

John was born in Dayton, Illinois and raised on his family farm. As a stockman, he acquired valuable experience as a pioneer settler. John is widely respected for being an earnest Christian with strong moral principles and an expert educator.

He resided on his homestead in Custer county, Nebraska for more than 30 years and witnessed the growth and development of the region. A dedicated member of his community, he was an active and helpful participant in churches and societies alike.

He had a deep-seated love of children, especially his grandchildren Tristan, Devin, Kaden and Mason. With his wife Jane Greenwalt he enjoyed traveling around Europe as well. Preceded in death by his parents Peter and Virginia Greenwalt as well as brother Bill Greenwalt, he leaves behind an enduring legacy.

He was an influential ornithologist, studying bird flight. His three books about birds included “Hummingbird,” which described the extraordinary flight patterns of hummingbirds.

He received numerous honors, and was made an honorary member of the Society of Ornithologists. Tragically, he passed away in 1993 at 92 years old after predeceasing his wife Jane. Born in Philadelphia, he earned degrees from Germantown Academy and Temple University before marrying Jane Stout on February 10, 1951.
