John Avery Collins Guyton was born in 1923 in Miami, Florida. His parents moved the family to Jackson, Mississippi in 1955 when the medical school at Ole Miss relocated. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

At age 27, Guyton was diagnosed with polio. He suffered paralysis in his left arm, left shoulder, and right leg.

After he was released from military service, he followed his father into the oil business. He was also a firefighter with the Detroit Fire Department. During his high school years, he took an interest in bugs. When he traveled to the Smoky Mountains, he spotted a beetle.

In 1967, riots broke out across Detroit. 43 people were killed. The city became a hotbed of drug violence. Many residents fled their homes.

Professional Career

In 1950, John Guyton was recognized as one of the top 10 “supermen” in the U.S. He received a Presidential Citation for his work. At the time, his training had been interrupted twice.

His professional career has been distinguished with more than 80 major awards. He was also a member of the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla for 50 years.

He was a member of the Hillsborough County Junior College Board, the Orange Bowl Committee and the Hillsborough County Civil Service Board. He was a real estate agent, had a vending machine business on campus, and owned several businesses.

In his career, he has built motorized hoists for lifting disabled patients. He has worked with Croda Pharma to develop a Nucleic Acid Delivery platform. This platform is used by pharmaceutical companies around the world to manufacture lipids.

Achievements and Honors

John Guyton, an All-American basketball player at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), is now a renowned lawyer and has achieved many accolades. He has been a member of the Florida Bar, the Federal Bar Association, and the Hillsborough County Bar Association.

As a junior, he was named an All-American by NAIA District 18, and he helped IUP win a 17-6 record. He was also a three-time PSAC West all-star. His senior year, he led the Sailors to a 55-31 record, and he was named the county’s leading scorer. In fact, Guyton made 469 field goals, and he hit 62 percent of his shots.

He is a member of the Federal Bar Association, the Hillsborough County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. During his legal career, he has been recognized for his leadership skills. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

Personal Life
