A druggist by profession, Halecky plunged into the political world through civic activities. He led a community group that fought a controversial plan to relocate Route 169 to Route 440, opening up more space for retail development.

He served five consecutive terms as a councilman for the city of Bayonne. He said he will not seek re-election this year.

Early Life and Education

John Halecky was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Bayonne when he was one year old. He worked his whole life at Hudacko’s Pharmacy, which was where he met his wife, Sonia.

He was named to the City Council in 1986 and has served as a two-term mayor and five consecutive terms on the council. He has been recognized for several of his accomplishments, including the city’s first light rail system and a new East Side pumping station to help solve flooding problems in neighborhoods along Park Side Lane.

For his efforts, he was named to the Order of St. Andrew – Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1982, which is the highest order accorded to laymen. He also had the honor of being awarded the Bouras Award for Extraordinary Archon Stewardship in 2012. He was an avid skier and enjoyed a variety of summer and winter activities, from Alpine skiing to swimming.

Professional Career

john halecky has worked in the film industry as a cinema and photography major at Ithaca College, directing and shooting a number of short 16mm films. He then went on to work in different areas of the entertainment industry including feature film development at Paramount Studios and Warner Bros.

In 1982, he was invested as a member of the Order of St. Andrew – Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and was awarded the title, Ekdikos, or Defender of the Churches. He served on the National Council of the Order as Treasurer and then as Vice Commander.

He was a member of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in Elizabeth and Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in North Wildwood, New Jersey. He is survived by his wife, Sonia, and his children, John Halecky III (Archon Notarios), Nadine Quaglia (Silvio Quaglia, MD) and four grandchildren: Justin, Jennifer and Cassandra.

Achievements and Honors

A former Bayonne city councilman, John Halecky was a strong advocate for community-oriented projects, such as helping to do away with flooding in Park Side Lane and promoting the redevelopment of the area. He also led community opposition to the relocation of Route 169, which runs through the neighborhood.

During his business career, Halecky was Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and a Director of Comstock Group; President of Elkcom Leasing; Chief Operating Officer of Fischbach Corporation and Principal of Peninsula Associates. He received a Master of Business Administration degree from Rutgers University and was a veteran of the United States Army.

He was a long-time member of the National Council of the Order and has been intimately involved in virtually all major initiatives of the Archons for over a quarter century. He was a co-organizer of the groundbreaking International Archon Religious Freedom Conference held in November 2010 at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium and has participated in many other activities for the Order.

Personal Life

John Halecky is a retired pharmacy manager who lived in Bayonne, NJ. He was a long-time member of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in Elizabeth and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield, NJ.

He also served as a City Councilman for five terms, becoming the longest serving member of the 2nd Ward. He was president of the council in his first year, a high-profile position that put him at the center of many controversial issues such as the city’s revaluation of property and the relocation of Route 440, which opened up more land for a retail redevelopment project.

He also volunteered for many organizations such as the Bayonne Town Center Management Corporation, the Cable TV Committee and the Special Improvement District. He was a supporter of the expansion of light rail to Eighth Street and other projects.
