John Hillen is an award-winning CEO, leadership expert, former Assistant Secretary of State, decorated combat veteran, and popular business school professor. He is the author of What Happens Now: Reinvent Yourself as a Leader Before Your Business Outruns You (Select Books, 2018).

A veteran of four defense technology services firms, Hillen serves as Chairman of the Professional Services Council. He is also the Executive in Residence & Professor of Practice at George Mason University.

Early Life and Education

John Hillen grew up in Brooklyn, New York and attended City College of New York. He joined the Army and served in Vietnam as a major, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He advised Iranian troops in the 1970s and developed a deep interest in Mideast policy. He was also a contributing editor to National Review magazine and an ABC News consultant.

He served as assistant secretary of state for political-military affairs in the Bush administration. He was also the head of the defense and intelligence practice at American Management Systems Inc. He was recently named executive in residence at George Mason University’s School of Management.

Personal Life

John Hillen, a decorated combat veteran and former Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, died on April 27, 2018, at his home in Sanford, N.C. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Grassi Hillen; a son; a daughter; and five grandchildren.

He was the Executive-in-Residence and Professor of Practice at George Mason University’s School of Business, teaching strategy and leadership. He is also a columnist for Washington Technology magazine and writes about leadership issues in a variety of media outlets.

An expert on international security issues, he has written or edited several books and scores of articles in leading journals. He was also a trustee of the Foreign Policy Research Institute and Hampden-Sydney College. He has been a guest on many national television shows and radio programs.
