Like his predecessors, he’s been accused of relying on charter-school takeovers and a substitute-teacher staffing company. But he’s also been accused of attempting to fundamentally reimagine teaching in Philadelphia.

Early Life and Education

In addition to his work as a teacher, Hite is an author and a musician. He co-founded the jug band Canned Heat in 1965 with Jim Wilson and Mike Perlowin.

The early years of his life were spent on a farm in the Kingwood area near Grafton. He received a country school education there, and after leaving home became a teacher.
