When I was in college, I met an acquaintance named John Wetmore who was from San Antonio, Texas. He had an amazing personality, and I knew he would be a good fit for me. He was not the richest guy in the world, but he was definitely the smartest. Moreover, he had a great sense of humor. Since then, we’ve been friends. Here’s a bit about him, including his background, his professional career, and his accomplishments and honors.

Early Life and Education

John Wetmore is an American lawyer who focuses on appellate practice. He graduated from Miami Springs Senior High School in 1976 and received his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1980. In 1989, he earned a Master of Business Administration from the Florida Institute of Technology.

During his early years, he was interested in birds. At the age of eight, he started making field journal entries. When he was a teenager, he joined the Confederate Army and served in the Battle of Seven Pines.

Later, he worked for the Biological Survey of the US Department of Agriculture, first as an agent and later as a biologist. As an agent, he spent nearly a year surveying bird life in Puerto Rico.

Professional Career

Getting into law school at age 17 is no small feat. As such, John Wetmore has been around the block a few times. In fact, he has been around the block so many times that he has a good idea of what’s what. And with more than 1200 employees under his wing, it’s no wonder.

The best part is that he actually likes what he does. Despite having an MBA to his name, he is a doer at heart. He has spent his free time volunteering with organizations such as the Greater Toronto United Way and the Sunnybrook Foundation. The best way to summarize John Wetmore’s achievements and honors would be to name drop. As a member of the aerospace and defense industry, he has held numerous positions of responsibility. He is currently the president and CEO of IBM Canada Ltd. In the past, he has served as a naval officer, submariner, and aircraft carrier pilot. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the United States Naval Academy.

After his stint in the Navy, Wetmore landed a job as a power reactant storage and distribution engineer at the Space Shuttle Program’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. This, he says, was the highlight of his military career. Among other things, he was the lucky recipient of the coveted space shuttle commander’s badge. On a more personal note, Wetmore was a proud parent of two daughters. One of the girls, Alexandra, is currently studying Polish in order to prepare for a nine-month stint at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Krakow, Poland.

Personal Life

John Wetmore’s personal life was a story of love, faith, and hope. He was a beloved father, friend, and husband. His family lived in Wetmore, CO, and he loved the mountains in Colorado. As a child, he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed the beautiful mountains.

He was a graduate of Miami Springs Senior High School in 1976 and earned a Master of Business Administration from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1989. After graduating, he worked in various organizations promoting fine arts. He also was a director of organizations that were focused on improving the breeding of horses.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Florence, CO. In 1970, he visited Wetmore, and loved living in the area.

For a guy with a name like Wetmore, it should be no surprise that he owns a life insurance agency. The company has over 1200 employees and is one of the largest in its segment. With the influx of retirees in the metroplex, John Wetmore and his wife have had to up their game. Not to mention, the recession has put a damper on their business plans. Thankfully, they aren’t alone in their predicament.

One of their biggest competitors, MetLife, has been able to weather the storm. While they may not have as many gimmicks to choose from, they do have one of the highest rehire rates in the industry. In the long run, they will be a much stronger and more dependable force in the industry.
