His nicknames include “The Golden Arm” and “Johnny U”. At the start of his professional career, he was cut from the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the Baltimore Colts were impressed by his talent. So, in 1956, he signed a contract with the team. This deal paid him $437 per week for 12 weeks. In the final year of his career, he received $1,750.

Also, he tried his hand in real estate, broadcasting, and bowling alleys. Interestingly, he rented his name out to many of these businesses, and made some money.

His business ventures did not turn out to be a hit. It was not until he teamed up with other investors that he was able to acquire a circuit board company. Unfortunately, his investment quickly went sour, and he was forced to sell it off.
