Josiah Adams was one of Framingham’s leading citizens during the first half of the 19th century, serving as an influential attorney and civic leader in Framingham.
He kept two account books dating from 1811-1837 and 1857-1868 that include day labor tasks such as work on houses, fixing fences and gates, fixing sinks etc. As well as this he also recorded work done for Portsmouth furniture maker Samuel Dockum.
Early Life and Education
John Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts on October 30, 1735 and went on to attend Harvard College and launch a successful law practice in Boston. In 1764 he married Abigail Smith and they temporarily lived both Braintree and Boston together.
Adams began keeping a journal as a teenager, documenting all aspects of his life including struggles in school. Over time, Adams realized he needed to become more vigilant with his studies in order to raise his grades.

Josiah Adams was an outstanding and influential resident of Framingham who distinguished himself through his political, civic and professional engagements in Framingham – earning him the nickname of “Squire of Framingham”.
Josiah Adams was born November 3rd 1781 in Acton Massachusetts to Moses and Abigail Stone Adams.
Following his graduation from Harvard in 1807, Josiah was admitted to the bar. Moving from Cambridge to Framingham and opening an office there in Central Square.
He was an advocate of education, taking an active part in public schools as well as helping the newly founded Framingham Academy from 1820-1852 as trustee and library member.
