Net worth measures the total value of assets less the total liabilities owed by an individual, which serves as an accurate reflection of financial health. Income alone doesn’t always take this into account, such as through job loss or reduced hours at work. To calculate your net worth, start by listing all your assets (cash, savings accounts, retirement accounts, investment accounts and cars). Subtract out liabilities like credit card debt, student loans and mortgages from this number to calculate it accurately.
