The Murph Challenge is a highly popular CrossFit workout that honors fallen Navy SEALs while testing athletes’ strength, endurance and mental toughness. The session can last anywhere from an hour to over three hours to complete successfully.
Early Life and Education
Penn State University honored Mark Murphy with two bachelor’s degrees – political science and psychology. After working at Goldman Sachs for 23 years, he also actively contributed his time and talent in numerous civic and philanthropic organizations – such as serving as finance chairman for the Democratic National Committee under Howard Dean.
Murphy has an extensive track record of supporting Democratic candidates, both individual presidential candidates and party committees, through contributions as small as $50 up to six-figure contributions to party committees. Additionally, he has shown support for progressive policy positions.
Jim Johnson, Ray Lesniak and John Wiesiewski came out swinging during the 90-minute debate with Rep. Tim Murphy for the Democratic nomination; yet Murphy held onto his significant lead over his competitors.
Professional Career
Murphy is a prison ministry worker, visiting over 200 jails worldwide to preach, counsel and raise money. Additionally, he serves as international director for Champions for Life–founded 35 years ago by former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bill Glass–which raises money and encourages charitable giving among prison inmates.
As part of his philanthropic efforts, Murphy has also taken up CrossFit. To honor fallen soldiers he initiated the “Murph Challenge”, consisting of several rounds of Lt. Michael P. Murphy’s Hero WOD that takes place every Memorial Day at his local gym – now drawing participants from all around the globe – wearing body armor from his famous heist as part of this challenging workout session.
Achievement and Honors
The Murph Challenge is one of the CrossFit “hero” WODs (workout of the day). It commemorates fallen service members and takes place each Memorial Day; to complete it requires both endurance and mental tenacity.
This workout includes a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups and 300 air squats. It can either be completed all at once or broken up into 20 rounds of Cindy: five pull-ups, 10 push-ups and 15 air squats each round.
This workout honors Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed while serving with SEAL Team 2. Prior to being deployed in Afghanistan he completed BUD/S, Army Jump School, and SEAL Delivery Vehicle training before receiving the Medal of Honor for his service.
Personal Life
Murph has lost some of his old swagger, his face showing signs of age and sun spots. The gold hued hair now receding at its temples; no longer sporting its trademark sunglasses.
Now he is the international director and oldest staffer for Champions for Life – an NFL star Bill Glass-founded prison ministry where he travels around preaching sermons, counseling inmates, raising funds and more. This job takes him all over the globe where he preaches his message while raising funds in various prisons worldwide.
Mr. Murph conducts the “Murph Challenge”, an emotional hero workout to honor fallen soldiers and veterans on Memorial Day. It involves wearing a 20-lb weighted vest or body armor while performing exercises meant to push people physically and mentally.
