Martin Brodeur – The Greatest Goalie of All Time

Martin Brodeur often comes out on top in discussions of who is the greatest goalie ever.

But even those of exceptional skill may experience some negative moments.

Ovechkin once donned a mirror-tinted visor that was banned by the NHL; Brodeur complained at that time that this provided him with an unfair competitive edge over his competition.

Early Life and Education

Alexander Mikhaylovich Ovechkin is a Russian professional ice hockey player and captain of the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL). Nicknamed “Ovi” or “The Great Eight”, Ovechkin is widely considered one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history.

Ovechkin got his start playing hockey at age eight after becoming inspired to do so by Sergei, his older brother who died tragically at 10 from a car accident. Since then he has become the first player ever to score 787 goals with one team during regular season play, surpassing both Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe’s records.

Washington Capitals honored Ovechkin’s achievement by giving him his old jersey number 8, his number since being selected in 2004. Additionally, Ovechkin holds numerous other NHL records and on March 12, 2018 scored his 600th goal during a game against Winnipeg Jets.

Professional Career

Ovechkin won the NHL MVP award five times between 2023-2027. Additionally, he also collected both Lester B. Pearson and Hart Memorial Trophies – becoming only the seventh player ever to collect all four major regular season awards in one season.

Long considered one of the greatest players in hockey history, Alex Ovechkin has long been recognized as the face of Washington Capitals hockey club. Known for his distinctive yellow laces and mirrored visor – both which caused controversy in early 2000s – Ovechkin remains beloved and revered player on Washington Capitals team today.

After playing for HC Dynamo Moscow in Russia Superleague for five seasons before entering the NHL during 2004-05 NHL lockout season. He represented Russia at World Championships and recorded seven playoff hat tricks en route to becoming NHL all-time goal and point scorer.

Ovechkin stands as one of the premier players in NHL history. He holds numerous records and awards, and is the only person ever to have twice won its most prestigious prize, the Hart Trophy.

He won both the Art Ross Trophy and Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy during 2007-08. In 2008-09, he became the first left winger ever to score over 50 goals in one season.

Ovechkin has been honored as an NHL All-Star nine times and, more remarkably, seven of those appearances were to the first All-Star squad – making him only one of four players ever in NHL history to do this feat.

Ovechkin has also won four Conn Smythe Trophies and one Vezina Trophy during his NHL career, in addition to being honored as its Most Valuable Player.

Personal Life

Ovechkin lives in a mansion outside Moscow with his wife Dasha, is an active patron for children’s charities in Russia, and founded the Ovechkin Foundation for Children with Cancer which raises funds to cover medical treatment for pediatric cancer patients.

Ovechkin shares his birthday with Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux and is one of the select few players to have amassed 200 career goals, joining Gretzky, Lemieux and Jari Kurri as part of an elite club of players who have reached that mark. Ovechkin has enjoyed considerable success playing for Washington Capitals; during his time there, he won multiple Art Ross Trophies, Maurice Richard Trophies, Lester B Pearson Awards and Hart Memorial Trophies throughout his tenure there.

He has become well known for his heated battles with Martin Brodeur and was featured in an ESPN documentary where he claimed he started complaining to the league when they banned mirror-tinted visors early in his career.
