Joseph Paul Torre is an American former professional baseball player and manager. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1940, Torre made his professional debut with Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves as a catcher before progressing through first baseman and third base roles during an 18-year playing career that also featured stints at first and third bases.
He was considered one of the top defensive catchers in baseball and had swift hands at bat; he could hit both power and average with equal ease. Unfortunately, in 1968 his numbers began to decrease following an encounter with a pitcher that resulted in hairline fractures of both cheekbones on his left cheekbone and jaw; these caused 27 games missed resulting in his retirement as an active player on 18 June 1977 while remaining involved as an advisor and managing various teams to success.
Achievement and Honors
Torre began his managerial career with the Mets, leading them to two playoff appearances and winning one World Series championship. Following that stint he spent 12 seasons managing the Yankees – recording three 100-win campaigns as well as two AL pennants in that span.
Torre accomplished much during his playing career. He won a National League batting title and four times finished in the top 10 for hits, slugging percentage and RBI. Additionally, he received the Rawlings Gold Glove award as a catcher.

He signed with the Milwaukee Braves organization in 1961 and was initially assigned to Eau Claire of the Northern League. By May, however, he had made it up into the majors for his first major league appearance.
