Shabby chic – how does this style work?
Shabby Chic (in German: shabby chic) is a trend in design that originated in England in the 1980s. The memory of former English country houses is alive with this style. It ensures cosiness and romance in a retro style. Its pioneer is the designer Rachel Ashwell, who furnished her house with old restored and painted furniture. She later opened a furniture and decoration shop in this style. Today this style of furnishing is world-famous and its top designer is one of the most popular.
Shabby chic focuses on tinted pastel colors, especially white, pink, ocher, light gray, sand and light turquoise. These soft shades create a feeling of calm and light.
The furniture and accessories are covered by subsequent layers of paint, the edges are even scratched off, cracked and chipped here and there. The old and used items are reminiscent of the warmth and atmosphere in a country house from days long gone.
For this style of living, coarse wood, stone, wrought iron are preferred materials, as well as textiles cotton, linen and lace in the same soft colors.
The flower patterns are everywhere – on the curtains, pillows, mirrors, lamps, wallpaper, pictures, even on the furniture. Kitschy, almost withered roses decorate the rooms. Usually they are combined with stripes and checks.
The variety of decorative items with sentimental value is typical. Often the objects are handcrafted and richly adorned with ribbons, lace and painted flowers or decorated with decoupage. Vintage-style pictures, albums, clocks, boxes and cases full of memories. Candlesticks, trays, old irons, angels, vases and mirrors embellish the room.
The basic elements of this style include the side tables, light shelves and porcelain, cared for by irresistible floral patterns. In the case of the lights, the crystal and glass elements are used.
The main goal of shabby chic is comfort, which is why you will find many sofas, armchairs and high, soft, pillow-covered beds to relax in here.
Huge bouquets of roses or wildflowers go well with the interior.
The style doesn’t come with so many things “shabby“ before, to a large extent, it reflects femininity and romance.
