Early Life and Education

Ives was an extraordinary singer. In the 1950s he became a national sensation as James Barton’s replacement in Broadway musicals Paint Your Wagon and Show Boat; later appearing in Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof among others. This collection contains his professional files, scrapbooks and photos as well as scripts and publicity materials related to him.

In 1907, Ives experienced his first heart attack – one of several throughout his lifetime. However, despite these attacks he continued working at an intense pace, cultivating friendships with musicians and joining organizations that promoted progressive music; writing music as well as working as a life insurance agent. Over time Ives developed his trademark style of folk songs and stories which expressed America through one voice: this work connected vernacular with traditional elements to form what he termed “music of the ages,” as well as serving as an expression of American identity and American culture itself.

Professional Career

As an adult, Ives pursued a career in music, acting, and radio. He first played banjo publicly at age four. Following high school graduation he enrolled at Eastern Illinois State Teachers College (now Eastern Illinois University) to serve as an athletic coach but his musical interests soon eclipsed this goal.

Ives traveled around as an itinerant folk singer during the early 1930s. As part of the fledgling folk-revival movement, he performed alongside such notable figures as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.

Ives’s career included appearances in movies and Broadway plays; narration for television and radio broadcasts; earning him a Grammy nomination for his children’s album Chim Chim Cheree and Other Children’s Choices released in 1964; professional files, scrapbooks and photographs that document his career are also found here.

Personal Life

Ives was an immensely popular singer and actor from the 1940s through 1960s, particularly known for his recordings of traditional folk songs and hymns as well as for hosting his CBS radio program, The Wayfaring Stranger. Additionally he appeared in several films and narrated the 1964 television production of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

He began as a itinerant singer, traveling around and singing for change as well as performing in community productions. Although initially intending to study high school football coaching at college, music prevailed and he began appearing on radio programs instead.

During the early 1950s, Ives was called before the House Committee on Un-American Activities where he cooperated but did not identify individuals involved; this caused him to enter into an adversarial relationship with folk singer Pete Seeger and others.
