Steve Skaggs is an experienced newspaper publisher who most recently worked for The Dispatch in Lexington, North Carolina and previously as advertising director at the Daily Commercial in Lake County, Florida.
His career spans over three decades.
Early Life and Education
After decades as full-time pastors and ministers of music in Kentucky Baptist churches, Bro. Steve and Shirley have decided to retire from active ministry, yet still feel called upon by churches through interim services. Both reside in Hodgenville.
Skaggs was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in 2009 as a supplemental first-round draft pick and quickly advanced through their minor league system until suffering an injury to his right shoulder that prevented him from participating in significant portions of each season from 2013 on.
Professor Anderson also serves as an associate professor of graphic design at the University of Louisville, offering classes on semiotic theory and visual culture. Furthermore, he has created fonts tailored for specific uses – Rieven and Maxular Rx are among them.
Professional Career
Skaggs was selected in the 7th round (131st overall) of the 1979 NBA draft by Cleveland Cavaliers.
Skaggs became one of the best-loved representatives of bluegrass music during the 1990s, earning many new audiences and accolades through solo albums, collaborations with rock musicians like Burce Hornsby and concert/festival appearances.
He currently serves on the board of Lattice Semiconductor, a provider of programmable logic devices. Prior to that he held senior executive positions at various technology companies including Bain & Company.
Susanna Skaggs was born in Apex, North Carolina to Steve Skaggs and Leah Farriba; Steve works as a Senior Research and Development Engineer at Silvaco while Leah Farriba stays home and manages their household duties. Susanna’s father works in IT while his mother remains home.
Achievement and Honors
Skaggs has amassed many accolades during his distinguished career. These include multiple Grammy awards, induction into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and Bluegrass Hall of Fame as well as being honored with a National Medal of Arts by the US Government in 2020.
Skaggs established his Skaggs Family Records label in 1997 to mark his return to bluegrass music and provide a home for rising talent including Kentucky Thunder. Additionally he collaborated with contemporary acts like Jack White and Ashley Monroe while touring alongside both The Raconteurs and Burce Hornsby.
Steve Skaggs also serves on the boards of Lattice Semiconductor and Lonergan Partners. He earned both his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from University of California Berkeley as well as an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Personal Life
At his church and several public companies he has held directorship positions. Additionally he founded and now serves as President of the Steven J. Skaggs Endowed Scholarship at ISU that assists accounting students.
Songs of the Masters is his book featuring classic American blues, country music and jazz songs from early American blues to country. A gifted musician and songwriter himself, he has composed hits for Dolly Parton among others.
He currently resides in Bentonville, Arkansas with his wife Sharon and their two children, Cameron Mitchell and Bryan Fredrick. Additionally, they have many family members such as aunts and uncles, sisters, cousins and nieces and nephews to keep him company. Furthermore, the couple has been married for 27 years. Additionally, they share two dogs.
Net Worth
After several years with Steve Miller Band, Scaggs ventured off on his own with two albums titled Children of the Future and Sailor. Though initially it took some time before producing chart-topping songs with Silk Degrees album (1976), things eventually improved dramatically.
He was also an active member of both the Gospel Music Association and Kentucky Baptist Convention, actively engaging in home and international missions, youth ministry programs, as well as pastoral care of his churches he served.
