Steve Vermillion – A Heroic and Tenacious Combat Pilot

Steve Vermillion founded Vermillion Editions Limited, an internationally acclaimed print workshop. Additionally, he served on Puyallup City Council.

He was instrumental in the development and operation of regional mall projects such as Harris Teeter supermarkets, Lowe’s home centers, Target department stores and Kohl’s department stores – as a member of CBL & Associates real estate developer firm.

Early Life and Education

Steve Vermillion hails from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He attended Washington High School and graduated in 1980 under his parents Kenneth and Luella Vermillion’s guidance, having been imbued with strong values that foster equal opportunity through integrity and hard work.

He worked on Capitol Hill for 17 years, serving as Chief of Staff to Representatives Lincoln Diaz-Balart and David Rivera as well as National Security and Foreign Affairs Legislative Assistant for Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis). Tragically, leukemia claimed his life on November 15th despite all efforts.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Iker Vermillion; daughters Sarah and Joseph; son Dustin; brother Keven Vermillion and sister Alice Cleary Vermillion as well as an extra grandson he brought with him when he passed. Keven was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Hayesville.

Professional Career

After his military service, Steve Vermillion embarked on an impressive 26-year career as a Master Army Aviator, Armor/Air Cavalry Commander and senior staff officer. During this period he completed 1450 combat missions and evacuated over 2200 patients; earning the respect of his crew members, pilots, ground commanders, and enemy fighters along the way.

Irene assisted him in finding an apartment, securing months’ rent and household supplies as well as connecting with support services. This experience underscores why SSVF places so much importance on providing stable housing as the first step for its clients.

William was an avid sports fan who particularly loved cheering for Duke Blue Devils and Great Neck Bulldogs youth football teams. Additionally, he enjoyed hunting Native American artifacts and had amassed an extensive collection of arrowheads.

Achievement and Honors

Stephen Vermillion was an honorable veteran and dedicated public servant whose courage and devotion inspired many friends, family and colleagues. A passionate rower, he enjoyed spending his mornings rowing on the Potomac River.

He served for 21 years in the U.S Marine Corps, earning several accolades such as Silver Star and Legion of Merit awards; also Pistol Sharpshooter Badge and 5th Good Conduct Medal.

He was an active member of both the VFW and American Legion in Vermillion, SD, as well as an unwavering supporter of both organizations. Dustin was an adored son for Jennifer Conrad who survived him along with daughter Nora; Misty Swierczek was his stepdaughter; Gavin Geiken his bonus grandson; brother Kenneth Vermillion had a sister Sharon Vermillion with whom they shared many fond memories together as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Personal Life

The aviator was an outstanding and daring combat pilot who displayed unwavering commitment and courage while flying even in potentially deadly circumstances. His refusal to let fear overcome him earned him the respect of both enlisted crewmembers and officers on board his ship.

A memorial service with military honors will take place Saturday morning at Hopkins – Rector Funeral Home in Clayton with family receiving friends between 10 A.M. until time of services.

After departing CBL, he took on the presidency of Crosland Retail and developed over 4,000,000 square feet of office and retail space – including StoneCrest, Providence Commons, Ballantyne Commons, Olde Towne Village in Charlotte among many other projects.
