Steve Blount is a well-renowned Irish actor and co-author of the play Swing. For years he has worked closely with vulnerable populations such as homeless youth and domestic abuse survivors.

Dr. Steven Blount has over three decades of experience in diagnostic radiology. He received his degree from University of Tennessee / Memphis College of Medical Surgery. Additionally, Dr. Steven is affiliated with Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West and accepts multiple insurance plans.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Steven Blount is a Diagnostic Radiologist located in Goodlettsville, TN and trained at University of Tennessee / Memphis College of Medicinesurgery before becoming affiliated with Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West.

As associate director of CDC’s Center for Global Health Development, he provided leadership in multiple key areas, including partnership management with Ministries of Health, other US government agencies, UN organizations, the World Bank, private foundations, multi-national corporations and non-government organizations.

Blount also headed up CDC’s four-agency Polio Plus Initiative and helped reduce polio-endemic countries from 41 to six and bring us one step closer to eradicating it altogether. He served as lead strategist in many other global activities related to malaria, tuberculosis, and tobacco control initiatives.

Professional Career

Blount has continued his charitable commitments since retiring from NFL competition. He currently is a member of Lions Club International and participates in fundraising initiatives to aid individuals living with blindness. Additionally, he regularly interacts with church members from his community as well as volunteering at local events.

His clear thinking, humility, and gentle nature made a profound impression at The Carter Center and across the global public health community. He was truly an inspirational figure for all those privileged enough to have known him.

At Professional Retirement Consultants of Lake Charles, Louisiana he works as a financial planner. When not at work he can be found fishing and hunting the backwoods – holding fishing licenses both in Texas and Louisiana to take full advantage of each state’s natural resources.

Achievement and Honors

Blount was instrumental in leading efforts that reduced polio endemic countries from 41 in 1997 to four by 2010. Additionally, he managed several international programs and was the founding director of the Global Measles Partnership.

He has contributed to albums by artists including Adia Victoria, Dave Hause, Adeem The Artist and Molly Tuttle as well as opening for GRAMMY-winner Rhiannon Giddens at GRAMMYs and was the 2020 Strathmore Artist In Residence. Additionally he serves as an Emeritus Board Member of Bluegrass Pride while frequently speaking at conferences about progressive causes in music industry.

He employs his banjo to navigate an Afrofuturist course through sound archives and song collections. His performances, such as those featured on Smithsonian Folkways release The New Faith, defy boundaries between acoustic and electric sounds as well as traditional and modern sounds; between generations.

Personal Life

Blount also supports global health initiatives through his medical career. He works on intensifying binational coordination between Dominica Republic and Haiti in an attempt to eliminate malaria and lymphatic filariasis on Hispaniola Island; furthermore he actively contributes to the Center’s effort of providing public health training in low resource countries.

He is married to Helene Gydesen and has four children: Steven Blount, Schally Washburn, Alden Wade and Kia Riordan. Dr. Gydesen has 33 years of experience as a board-certified, fellowship trained radiologist.

Blount’s victims included elderly couples and single mothers who trusted him with their life savings, investing it in fictitious companies, bonds and IRAs that promised high rates of return. Manuel says it broke his heart to learn of Blount’s devastating actions on children who donated their time at Moss Bluff Buddy Ball charity events.
