The colorful beauty of ranunculus

Ranunculus (Ranunculus asiaticus) are of the flowers that truly delight the heart. They are wonderful, romantic and irresistible in their colorful beauty in the pot and in the garden. Even when it is still cold and uncomfortable outside, we remember the warmth and the blaze of colors of the warm seasons when we look at them. Even the small bouquet of ranunculus on the windowsill or on the table drives away the longing for spring mood, because these flowers always bring them with them. And that is also possible in winter, because from December to June you can get ranunculus as cut flowers in many color nuances from white to yellow, orange and pink to strong red. Later they are also offered in pots. And if you get this beauty in good time, you can also enjoy its lavish beauty in your own garden in summer.

Ranunculus are popular decorative plants. Nowadays they often have well over 60 petals. This makes their flower heads look like little balls. The first ranunculus were brought to France by the famous botanist Carolus Clusius in the 16th century. Back then they had far fewer petals than they do today and looked like the wild ranunculus with cupped, simple flowers. Nevertheless, they enchanted people with their charm, so that their brown, claw-like shaped tubers like the bulbs of tulips were traded at breathtakingly high prices. They later found their way into the gardens of the less wealthy plant lovers.

Modern and extensive flower cultivation has developed in our times. Ranunculus can now be found in numerous varieties with different flower colors. For the garden, mostly colorful mixtures are offered, the spherical heads of which are reminiscent of double peonies. They bloom outdoors from June, so they should be planted in March at the latest. You absolutely need a well-drained soil in the light penumbra. When the soil is moist, ranunculus can cope well with the strong sun.
