Early on in her life, Thomas considered becoming an architect; however, at a time when few women architects existed she decided to study art instead and become a painter instead. She attended Howard University and graduated in 1924 before beginning a 35-year teaching art at a D.C. junior high school which enabled her to support herself financially while continuing painting at nighttime.

Thomas initially explored realistic work, but eventually began exploring abstraction as she was inspired by Howard professor James V. Herring and fellow artist Lois Mailou Jones to forge her own style.

Thomas Boulevard was named in honor of a local sea captain who led several of the sloops that traded with West Indies for rum, spices and molasses. While some might consider its naming to be disrespectful or inappropriate, others welcomed it enthusiastically.
