Early Life and Education

Thomas Brookover was an outstanding athlete and basketball player who led his team to three consecutive state championships. He was honored with being selected to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-American team as well as being honored as its Most Outstanding Player for 1961.

Er was survived by his wife Carolyn; son Tom Brookover Jr. of Devola; daughters Judy Platounaris from Logan Ohio and Susan Hiles from Williamstown; four surviving grandchildren named Shyane, Nicholas, Madeline and Matthew Brookover as well as one brother as well as numerous family and friends.

Brookover had lived in Pittsburgh since graduating Langley High School. Following service with the United States Army he earned his degree at University of Pittsburgh through the GI Bill. A member of Lutheran Church.

Professional Career

Brookover has long been involved in shaping educational policy and raising funds for renovations. Additionally, he has delivered presentations at many ACUI annual conferences and seminars.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughters Kathy Ellen Brookover and Judy Platounaris of Devola and Susan Hiles of Williamstown; four grandchildren – Shyane Hiles, Nicholas Brookover, Madeline Brookover and Matthew Brookover as well as an infant grandchild; as well as their respective spouses and one infant grandchild who survive him. Unfortunately he was predeceased by both of his parents as well as one brother.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10am at First United Methodist Church in Dade City. In lieu of flowers, donations to First United Methodist Church or Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospitals would be welcome as donations can help support their work during times of grief. Achievement and Honors

Brookover was honored with being honored with induction into both the West Virginia Basketball Hall-of-Fame and Greater Akron Area Coaches’ Hall-of-Fame as well as becoming part of Portage County Sports Hall-of-Fame. At Alderson Broaddus College he earned three All-American selections while tallying more than 2,000 points during his collegiate career.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; three surviving children: Thomas Brookover Jr, Kathy Ellen Brookover of Lewisburg and Susan Hiles from Williamstown; four surviving grandchildren – Shyane Hiles, Nicholas Platounaris, Madeline Brookover and Matthew Brookover as well as two sister-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.

On September 23rd, Kaitlyn Garrett served as her friend’s maid of honor; Justin Allan served as best man while Jack Thomas took care of groom’s men duties.

On June 19, 1997, Appellee became entangled in the rollers of an inrunning nip point on a calendar machine owned and operated by Appellee’s appellant and experienced severe crushing injuries, third degree burns and loss of four fingers from his right hand – two, three, four and five to be exact. He experienced third degree burns that required medical treatment as well as crushed hand injuries that led to permanent scarring on that hand and loss of these four fingers from that hand.
