Early Life and Education

Thomas Dyson managed to escape most of his siblings’ scandals and tragedies, although he did lose Drewy by suicide at an alarmingly young age.

His first original invention was a sea boat design capable of driving both on land and water. Next he designed a wheelbarrow that featured an easily maneuverable plastic hopper, improving maneuverability over traditional designs.

Dyson attended Gresham’s School and Byam Shaw School of Art in Holt, Norfolk before attending Royal College of Art London and the Royal Academy of Engineering. His book details the challenges associated with being an entrepreneur, such as having an understanding partner (Deirdre Hindmarsh) and mentor (Jeremy Fry). Furthermore, Dyson mentions some of his favorite inventors such as Alec Issigonis, Soichiro Honda, Frank Whittle and Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Professional Career

Dyson was widely recognized for helping his clients out of tricky legal situations and was highly esteemed in Washington’s legal community.

Tom joined the Great Britain Rowing Team as a performance coach in 2007, and was then appointed lead coach of Para rowing in 2009. Since then he has coached Tom Aggar in AS single sculling to three consecutive World titles, and LTA mixed coxed four to a silver medal at both 2015 World Championships and Rio Paralympic Games.

Tom was accepted onto UK Sport’s elite coaching apprenticeship programme for 2011/12, which accelerates technical and personal development among high performance coaches. He lives with his family in rural England.

Achievement and Honors

Thomas is an active public speaker and commentator on USVI political and business matters, serving on the boards of directors of both the St. Croix-St. John Chamber of Commerce and Community Foundation of the USVI as a member. Additionally, Thomas co-chairs Suffolk University’s Truth Racial Healing & Transformation Center Institutional Policy Committee as co-chair for their Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Center; additionally mentoring new law school students of color through John Mercer Langston Workshop to pursue legal careers is another responsibility that Thomas undertakes regularly.

He also established the James Dyson Award, an international student engineering prize run in partnership with the British Council that honors inventions with global potential to improve lives. Winning projects must address an existing problem while showing evidence of iterative development and prototyping.

Personal Life

Thomas Dyson was a leading defense attorney in Washington state renowned for his skill at getting clients out of even the most complex legal situations. Additionally, he advocated for exploration beyond Earth in search of extraterrestrial life forms.

After graduating Columbia Law School as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, he joined Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and practiced law specializing in mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings and leverage buyout transactions totaling more than $166 billion. He participated in significant pro bono litigation matters; winning an estimated $14 billion judgment to recover misallocated school finance funds while leading federal civil rights enforcement.

Dyson owns several properties across South Gloucestershire and France. These include Dodington Park, a Georgian estate known for its stunning Georgian architecture, as well as Domaine des Rabelles in France. Furthermore, he owns two Gulfstream G650ER private jets as well as an AugustaWestland AW-139 helicopter.

Net Worth

Dyson amassed his fortune through his eponymous company, which sells vacuum cleaners, hand dryers, and bladeless fans. Revenue for the privately held firm exceeded $7 billion in 2022.
