Thomas Erman – A Courageous Self-Advocate
Rehabilitating a classic film requires an experienced critic like Mark Van Doren; and in doing so he has shed new light on Mann himself.
Herman brings NFL-system experience from his time at Ohio State and Texas, and should add depth to the Owls offense.
Early Life and Education
Thomas Erman was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Leo and Mary Kleck Erman and attended St Anne’s Academy and the University of Arkansas before retiring from Allen Canning Company in Springdale after 40 years. Survivors include his wife Judy from Springdale; one son Chad Erman with grandsons Camden and Kaden of The Woodlands Texas as well as sisters Barbara Orlicek from Bella Vista; Janie Bell from Fort Smith; Becky Griffin; as well as several nephews and nieces.
World War I stirred Mann’s fierce patriotism and spurred him on to launch an uncompromising assault against any writer who failed to support German war aims, particularly writers from cosmopolitan backgrounds who refused German war aims. Mann used all his ingenuity in support of authoritarianism over democracy; creative irrationalism over “flat” rationalistic thought processes; and inward culture against moralistic civilization.
