Thomas Earl Haggerty, Jr.
Thomas Earl Haggerty was an amazing husband, father and Paw-Paw. He leaves two daughters as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren behind to his memory. A member of Pine Lane church.
He was an activist and writer on socialist politics, founding member of the Industrial Workers of the World and responsible for writing much of its constitution.
Early Life and Education
Haggerty began his electronics-focused career while serving in the military and eventually went on to be a local sales representative and professor at Oregon State University for 26 years.
John was an outstanding author and researcher in hydrology, publishing more than 75 peer-reviewed articles and conducting groundbreaking work across watershed science, hydrology and climate change research.
Mick enjoyed fishing, camping and woodworking as hobbies in his free time and spent his leisure with family. Never one to meet strangers or be stranger-phobic, Mick will be greatly missed by all who knew him and will be remembered fondly by daughters Tonya Van Sant (Cayuga Indiana) and Lisa Bey (Danville Illinois); granddaughters and great-grandchildren as he will be memorialized at DeVerter Funeral Home Cayuga Indiana). A memorial service will be held there.
Professional Career
He has spent much of his career representing both individuals and corporations in cases involving personal injury, strict products liability and Labor Law. He is widely respected for his tireless representation of both plaintiffs and defendants alike in litigation proceedings.
He has also served on the boards of numerous companies, such as MGIC Investment Corporation, First BanCorp., MoneyGram International Inc. Ceridian Corporation and Black Knight Financial Services LLC.
As former President of the NENY PGA and one of Glens Falls Country Club’s veteran tournament professionals, he won numerous local and state events while helping bring the Donald Ross Classic tournament. Furthermore, he is widely respected as a golf instructor.
Achievement and Honors
Thom was an invaluable member of his family and greatly enjoyed trivia, Karaoke and spending time with his nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years Joan; daughter Sharon Haggerty of Little Falls, New York; sons Ronald and Thomas as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends.
He possesses extensive expertise in audio visual (AV) integration and project management as well as being an avid supporter of innovation in higher education. At Oregon State University he held several leadership roles such as geology program head, department chair and associate dean for research.
In 2023, he received the MBWA Lt. Frank J. Haggerty Award – given annually since 1936 to the top Division I men’s college basketball player from around New York and given by members of Met Basketball Writers Association to recognize excellence on the court. Votes on this award are cast by members of Met Basketball Writers Association.
Personal Life
He was an admired husband to Gail Shea, whom he shared over 45 years of joyous marriage. Furthermore, he was beloved Uncle Tom to 35 nieces and nephews – especially 7 Corey children – whom he deeply cherished as family.
He currently sits as a director at Black Knight, Ceridian HCM Holdings Inc and Dun & Bradstreet Corporation as well as being a trustee for Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Additionally, he previously held positions at Sedgwick Claims Management Services and Cott Corporation.
Hagerty arrived in Las Vegas during an active period for activism. Almost immediately he became active in resisting carpetbaggers who sought to privatize common lands owned by Hispanic and indigenous populations, which Hagerty helped thwart with resistance tactics and activism. Additionally he helped form the Industrial Workers of the World as its founding President – writing its preamble and key parts of its constitution – contributing largely to its foundation and evolution.
