Tiju Thomas is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He leads their ‘Applied Nanostructure Engineering and Nanochemistry’ research group; his primary areas of interest include creating compositionally complex oxides, oxynitrides and hybrid materials to meet engineering ends.

Professional Career

Professor Tiju Thomas is an assistant professor in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (Chennai). He serves as head of their “Applied Nanostructure Engineering and Nanochemistry Lab”. In 2012 he received the “INSPIRE Faculty Award” from Government of India; later that same year was selected for Fast Track Young Scientist Award by Institute. His research interests focus on device materials (functional ceramics), electronics/optics properties of hybrid materials like Nitrides/Oxynitrides/Oxynitrides hybrid materials/morphology transitions within nanostructures both theoretically/experimental. Additionally he actively works with technology entrepreneurs on translational research resulting in 180+ publications worldwide and 12 patents!

Tiju has received both the “INSPIRE Faculty Award” and ‘Fast Track Young Scientist Award” from Government of India; has written several journal articles and patents; also served on editorial board of “Ceramics International”.

Personal Life

Chris Thomas was an extraordinary husband and loving father, as well as being generous and humble grandpa. On June 5, 2012 he went home to join God; however, he leaves behind Annamma Thomas, daughters Suja Varghese and Shini Mathew, son-in-law Pastor Mathew Oommen as well as grandchildren Akza, Chris, Sheril Steby Sharon Nathan Jennisa Christopherlyn to mourn him.
