What do you write in footnotes?
Footnotes belong to scientific texts. Above all, they serve to prove the sources of direct or indirect quotations. They also have the task of inserting additions that relieve the main text, explanations or comments.
When are references required?
In the case of verbatim use, the source must be cited in any case! This also applies if not a whole sentence but a larger section of a sentence is taken word for word. In addition, reading and writing have “a historically quite changeable profile” (Hurrelmann 2002: 123).
How many sources per footnote?
Tip: Often students ask us how many footnotes and sources are required. Of course, we cannot give a general answer here. One footnote per page on average is definitely not enough, but five per page is enough. The following applies: You don’t have to attach a footnote to every sentence.
Where are the sources of images given?
In addition to the information directly below the figure in the text, there are figures with a complete reference to the source in the bibliography. It is important that you cite the source for all information that comes from other authors.
