What does the arrow next to the tank symbol mean?

Almost nobody knows them because they are simply too small and hardly ever stand out: the arrows next to the tank symbol in the speedometer unit. The Japanese have been standard for a number of years, but in the last few years almost all manufacturers have adopted them. Those little arrows pointing left or right simply show the position of the tank cap!

If you always drive your own vehicle, you naturally know whether to fill up on the left or the right. Especially with rental cars, it can often be the case that you have to check first. Thanks to the arrows, however, this is superfluous. Incidentally, Japanese manufacturers often have the fuel filler cap positioned on the driver’s side, while German brands often have it on the passenger side. If in doubt: Always look closely at the fuel gauge!

Regardless of whether the display is analogue or digital: the arrow now appears on almost every car and points to the side of the fuel filler cap!
