George Afton – A Prominent Figure in Star Valley, Wyoming

George Afton was an iconic figure in Star Valley, Wyoming’s history as a prominent businessman and member of the town council for many years.

He owned a large piece of land in Star Valley and was known for his honesty and dedication to the people of the town. He participated in many community activities and served as Savings Bond Chairman during World War II.

Early Life and Education

George was born in Bridgewater, Wyoming on March 1, 1908 and lived there for the first four years of his life. He received his education at a country school nearby until his junior year of high school at Arispe, Wyoming – from which he graduated in 1940.

He attended college at Utah State University in Salt Lake City and earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. Additionally, he studied welding and worked on a railroad in Creston before relocating to Osceola in 1944.

He was a rancher, outfitter, lawyer and legislator; an influential leader in his community as well as an outdoors enthusiast and sportsman. On his fur farm he raised silver fox, mink, beaver and chinchilla for breeding purposes; developing an effective fur grading system which is still used today. Additionally he contributed to improving Swift Creek’s water system and Afton’s septic system through his efforts.

Professional Career

At American Conservation Experience (ACE), Afton serves as Chainsaw Coordinator and Trainer. She manages project logistics, instructs new Corpsmembers on chainsaw use, and supervises projects to ensure they meet her high standards.

Afton has always had a passion for the outdoors and she was delighted that a career in environmental service allowed her to spend time outside. As an active member of Coconino Rural Environment Corps (CREC) for nine years, Afton saw how her work directly impacts nature’s resources.

She served as a crew leader for CREC, and it was rewarding to her that the Corpsmembers she trained could apply their abilities to other jobs after they left. That was what made her job so fulfilling.

His ministry brought joy into his heart as he preached Jesus’ Gospel with simple knowledge of Scripture that didn’t elevate him above others, yet with deep insight into God’s will. Though not educated according to worldly standards, George had an in-depth knowledge of God’s Word that set him apart.
