What contributes the most to climate change?

Humanity is increasingly influencing the climate and temperature on earth through the use of fossil fuels, cutting down rainforests and raising livestock. The amount of naturally occurring greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increases enormously, and this increases the greenhouse effect and global warming.

What are the main consequences of climate change?

Climate change affects all regions of the world. The polar ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising. Some regions are experiencing more extreme weather events and increasing precipitation, while extreme heat waves and droughts are increasing in other regions.

Is plastic bad for the environment?

are broken down poorly. Plastic products just break down into smaller and smaller pieces. If plastic items end up in the environment or in bodies of water as uncontrolled waste, then the decomposition can last for many decades; a plastic bottle can be expected to take several centuries to decompose.

How does the plastic get into the sea?

Garbage is washed down rivers into the sea with sewage or blown into the water from garbage dumps on the coast. In many places bathers carelessly leave their rubbish on the beach. Shipping also contributes to the pollution of the seas.

What’s so bad about plastic?

Pollutants in and on plastic Hazardous substances are added during the manufacture and processing of plastics, such as plasticizers, flame retardants, dyes and UV stabilizers. If the plastic ends up in nature, then these dangerous substances can get into the environment.

What happens to the plastic?

Of course, our plastic waste goes in the yellow bag. (And that, by the way, only since 1991, before that all plastics were disposed of with residual waste or landfills.) The other half was used for energy, i.e. burned, partly in landfills or as a substitute for fossil fuels.

What is plastic anyway?

All sorts of synthetic materials are called plastic. They are mainly made from petroleum with some additives. The most commonly used plastic is polyethylene. It is used, for example, for garbage bags, cables or pipes.

Why is there plastic?

In 1907, Leo Hendrik Baekeland, who was born in Belgium, made an amazing discovery: if you mix phenol and formaldehyde, you get a plastic that can be used to make all sorts of exciting objects.
