He currently heads Seymour Middle School after having served for 10 years as principal and director of secondary education in Marion County.

As a former victim of bullying himself, he’s not intimidated from taking on this issue as an adult. In fact, he has joined anti-bullying campaigns and spoken at conferences about it.

Today, his eyes no longer show signs of melancholy – they light up instead when he talks about his two sons, and the family that would not exist without taking that first testicular cancer treatment seriously.

On May 1st 2009, after being subject to years of torment by bullying, Daniel Mendez took his own life. Following this tragedy, his classmates established Cool 2 Be Kind (C2BK), a club which promotes peace on campus by combatting bullying through activities, marches, dances and other events designed to increase awareness about its harmful consequences.

Dr. Mendez has performed medical missions in Honduras and El Salvador, speaking Spanish fluently while specializing in rheumatology. He met his wife during medical school; together, they have two children.
