Early Life and Education

Dave Cavell was born in Brookline, Massachusetts and is running for Congress in Massachusetts’ Fourth District – which stretches from the western suburbs of Boston down the coast.

Before running for office, Cavell held positions as a senior advisor and assistant attorney general in the office of Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, where he spearheaded legal efforts against opioid manufacturers Purdue Pharma. Additionally, he served as presidential speechwriter and aide at the Obama White House, as well as deputy director of new media in Governor Deval Patrick’s administration.

Cavell is best known for his books The Claim of Reason: Wittgenstein, Skepticism, Morality and Tragedy (1979) and In Quest of the Ordinary: Lines of Scepticism and Romanticism (1988). As a philosopher he draws inspiration from philosophers such as Wittgenstein, Freud, Nietzsche and Kant which inform his own thinking.

Professional Career

Dave Cavell has extensive experience in local, state and federal public service. He served two years as a Presidential Speechwriter at the White House and is currently Senior Advisor and Assistant Attorney General in Maura Healey’s office at Massachusetts Attorney General.

His first job was as campaign manager for Louisiana Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne, and it quickly became evident that he had a knack for politics.

He was also a teacher, instructing fourth grade in the South Bronx of New York. On occasion, he would wear his Red Sox jersey to school.

In addition to teaching, she served as matron of L’Ecole Belge d’Infirmieres Diplomees nursing school during World War II. To avoid detection by German soldiers during that conflict, she hid soldiers inside barrels. Later arrested and tried for treason, she was found guilty and executed by firing squad (Ryder, 1975).

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, having worked as a speechwriter in Governor Deval Patrick’s office before moving to D.C. where he served two stints as Presidential Speechwriter before returning home as Senior Advisor and Assistant Attorney General for Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s Office. He has received endorsement from Brookline Selectboard Chair Bernard Green, former Chair Neil Whishinsky, and Housing Commissioner Christina Wolfe.

He hopes to push for a Green New Deal and national strategy to combat the opioid epidemic, while also protecting people of color.

Cathleen Cavell’s Brookline home has been transformed into a campaign headquarters for her son. It’s filled with campaign staffers who come and go quickly throughout the day.
